The general area is well served with a range of schools in the state and private sectors. Please note that catchment areas and/or entrance examinations may apply. 

Darrick Wood Schools provide primary education through to secondary and property within the area is in high demand. There are well-regarded primary schools including Farnborough Village, Tubbenden and Warren Road and two highly ranked selective state secondary schools in St Olave’s and Newstead Wood. 

There is also a wide selection of excellent schools in the independent sector to choose from including: Bromley High; Eltham College; Whitgift School; Sevenoaks School; Royal Russell and Radnor House to name but a few. 


Downe and High Elms tend to offer property with more outdoor space and generally larger plot sizes. Property types vary from small, flint, terraced cottages to larger, detached period mansions. The area is particularly popular with those seeking rural charm and peace and quiet away from the bright lights of the City.   

Going Out

In the immediate locality there are some popular eateries. The Teashop in Downe High Street serves a vast array of delicious cakes and is full of old English charm. The Queen’s Head pub in Downe village has long been popular with locals, as is the local Indian "The Rajdoot", which is somewhat of a local institution.  From Downe and High Elms, one also has access to an excellent range of restaurants in areas such as Keston and Locksbottom including Chapter One and Cyprianis which are both popular places to enjoy fine dining. Herbert’s is situated overlooking the picturesque Keston Common. Ye Olde White Lion on Farnborough Common, which was established in 1626 and one of the oldest in the borough; and the British Queen are popular pubs, which are a short drive away. 


Recreational Facilities

  • On your doorstep is High Elms park which offers 250 acres of countryside and woodland to explore and is located on the ridge of the North Downs. The park offers a number of facilities including a nature centre, ice well, visitor centre. The site is also home to a sustainable education centre, which houses two large multi-functional rooms for community, business and educational use and a café.  
  • The scenic landscape of the North Downs with its waymarked footpaths is a delight for keen walkers.  
  • Down House, the house in which Charles Darwin lived and worked for 40 years is a popular attraction. The house offers a small museum with beautiful grounds to explore.  
  • Further afield there are sports centres in Bromley, Orpington and Sevenoaks and an indoor pool and library complex in Biggin Hill. Private sports centres in the area include Virgin Active, Nuffield Health and David Lloyd.  
  • There are many private clubs covering football, rugby, hockey, cricket, tennis and several golf courses to choose from, including High Elms Golf Course, Knockholt Golf course and Westerham Golf Club.
